The new four-cylinder Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance has been priced for Australia, and rings up at $187,900 before on-road costs.

That’s $19,724 more expensive than the old V8-powered C63 sedan.

Orders open today for the new C63, with customer deliveries to begin in January. It had originally been sent to arrive earlier this year.

Despite swapping a twin-turbo V8 for a turbocharged four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain, power is up by 125kW and torque by 420Nm.

Mercedes-AMG says the new sports sedan uses technology transferred directly from Formula 1, and boasts 50:50 weight distribution.

It rides on steel-spring suspension with adaptive damping, and for the first time in a C63 features rear-axle steering and a Drift Mode.
