Ford Australia is preparing to roll out a software update for the touchscreen in the Ranger ute and Everest SUV – and it won’t be reserved for new buyers.

The brand debuted a new look and behind-the-scenes tweaks for the system on the Ranger Platinum and Wildtrak X, but has confirmed to CarExpert they “will be progressively rolled out to other Ford Rangers in the field”.

“We look forward to sharing more details on the roll-out of SYNC4 updates in the near future,” a Ford Australia spokesperson told CarExpert.

Ford says “certain icons have a new look designed to be more familiar to users at a glance. The ‘Settings’ and ‘Controls’ menus have also been consolidated into a central ‘Controls’ section following customer feedback”.

“One major functionality addition is the Rear Camera On-Demand View, which allows customers to view the rear camera while driving at speeds of up to 10km/h, and Hitch View which gives a direct top-down perspective of the tow ball – particularly useful when setting off from a standstill while towing,” a spokesperson said.

CarExpert also understands changes have been made to ensure Apple CarPlay and Android Auto more reliably connect on startup.

Exactly when and how the updates will be rolled out to the fleet of “new-generation” Ford Rangers and Everests on Australian roads hasn’t been confirmed.

The Ranger and Everest are over-the-air update compatible, meaning owners don’t need to visit the dealership to have new features added.

The brand hasn’t yet used the functionality with its new Ranger and Everest line-ups, however, and hasn’t offered a timeframe for when it’ll roll out. CarExpert understands it could be before the end of 2023.
