A video posted on TikTok shows a mobile phone detection camera on fire in the Gold Coast, Australia.

Posted by atomic_von, the video shows a small fire starting inside the trailer. In a separate video from the same user, the base of the camera was completely engulfed and the fire brigade was at the scene.

“The fire was deliberately started by an unknown person. Ongoing investigations are occurring into the event,” a spokesperson from the Department of Transport and Main Roads told CarExpert.

“The fire happened on the evening of 30 December, 2023. The camera was not damaged in the fire but damage was sustained to the camera trailer. The trailer will be replaced as soon as possible.”

“This trailer was a mobile phone/seat belt camera and does not do speed enforcement. It is unfortunate that a device that is being used to save lives on Queensland’s roads would be damaged in this way. “

The fire produced a large amount of thick dark smoke and electrical sparks.

The fine for drivers caught using their mobile phones while driving in Queensland is $1161 and four demerit points.

It’s worth noting drivers can be fined if they are using their mobile phone while stopping at a traffic light or in traffic, as well as while the vehicle is in motion.
